I am an aspiring teacher, looking to develop my understanding of how to be the best teacher for my students and how I can my talents to help my students understand their talents. So, to begin, here are a few important facts about me:
- Honesty, Integrity, and Open mindedness are essential for harmonious living.
- I enjoy Creative Writing, Pop Culture, music, and movies, anything with words, and helping my students connect their world to the world of school.
- I enjoy people, and helping people develop a better sense of who they are and what they can do to help make the world a more pleasant place to live.
- I have a serious and unapologetic caffeine addiction.
- I prefer to keep students moving in the classroom, so they they are always awake and always learning. It was once said that my students are too busy to be thinking about how to cause trouble.
- The person doing the work is doing the learning, so my students will do the work.
- Sometimes the best teachers are the students, so I encourage the students to teach me and their peers about their passions.
- Learning is an individualized ability, and the style needs to be determined by the person who is doing learning.
Philosophy of Teaching English
I believe that all students can learn. I believe that students long to take possession of their education, and that they can learn best by example, therefore I will remain a passionate and continuous learner about my subject. I will do this by updating material that I use in the classroom, attending professional development, and asking my students to assess me as a teacher. I ask them to assess me because they are my audience and it is imperative that I gauge my audience's needs, so that they can remain engaged learners.
I will encourage my students to take possession of their learning by giving them a choice in the norms of the classroom. On the first day of school, we, as a class, will begin to create the community that we wish to see, by creating a respect agreement plan in which we decide on the norms in four categories: student to student, student to teacher, teacher to student, and everyone to the classroom and equipment. I believe that every student, and every educator, is entitled to a safe and personal space in which to learn, teach, and develop into better global citizens through the development of writing, reading, active listening and speaking, and critical thinking skills.
The best way for students to take possession of their education is to be empowered by choice in the content that they learn and the pace in which they learn it. I intend to giving them a choice in the pacing of the class, by allowing them to create their own class reading and writing schedule schedules, and giving them choice in the products they produce in the class. I will help them develop accountability and self-responsibility by holding them to the expectations that they have set for themselves. I will make sure the class stays challenging and engaging by keeping all standards and objectives at an (i+1) proficiency level and also making sure that the global community is brought within the classroom, and therefore my students schema of understanding.
It is my goal to stay connected to my students by taking an interest in their activities outside of the classroom as well as to be seen by the students at their games, meets, debates, and performances, at sometime during the year. This is important because when the students know that their teacher cares more about them then simply how they are doing in the class, then the students will be more willing to work with the teacher to do their best in the class. It also provides me with an additional way in which I can engage with my students in the classroom, and bring in the larger world school environment.
I will strive to help my students understand why what they are learning and producing is important to the “real world,” by going over objectives, and incorporating the purpose directly into the lesson, that this activity has value in life after school. I will do my best to make corrections and criticisms in a timely and effective manner for the students. I will do this by using a rubric whenever possible so that the students know my expectations, and also to be used as a medium for critique and corrections. A regular set of expectations I have for myself is, to keep out of each class the drama of home or of the last period, so that I am focused on the class at hand. With my temper, or lack of interest, I can kill a student's investment in learning and performing to the best of their ability in my class.
